Finger foods!

8 months, 2 weeks

Well, I feel like we were totally behind the ball with Brock's eating. We did one food a week thru all the veggies and some of the fruits. Since we didn't start food until he was 5 months old, it took quite a while to get thru everything. So, in the last week or so, we've sort of kicked it into overdrive. Nothing crazy - he's not eating pizza slices just yet, but I've been letting him try more and more of our food.

In just over a couple of weeks, we've gone from only having fruits and veggies, to now having cheese, crackers, mac n' cheese, a couple bits of meat, yogurt, etc. He LOVES yogurt!! We get him Yo Baby organic yogurt and he's a big fan! We also have started giving him steamed veggies and he really really likes them! He's gotten pretty good at 'gumming' (like chewing, only w/out the teeth, we call it gumming). I still am nervous so I give him pretty small bites of things for now. He's totally gotten the hang of picking up foods and putting them in his mouth, but sometimes the pieces are still too small for him to pick up b/c Mommy's a little paranoid.

We usually feed him his dinner while ours is in the oven, being made, etc. He still has mostly purees (sweet potatoes and apples this week!), but I try and give him at least one thing he needs to 'gum' on at dinner. The steamed veggies are great b/c they are still soft, but they are nutritious and he LOVES them. I figure there will come a time that he will HATE veggies so as many as I can get him to eat now are welcome! After he eats, we sit down at the table for our dinner and pull his high chair over to sit with us. Usually I'll give him a bite or 2 of what we're having. He's had mac n'cheese, spaghetti, french fries (baked, not fast food), taco meat, etc.

I never knew it could be so much fun letting him eat the things we're eating! He usually makes a funny face when he first gets the food in his mouth and it's hilarious! But I'm also just so proud of how quickly he's picked up on the chewing motion and being able to pick up food and put it in his mouth. He's a smart little guy and he picks up on things so quickly!!

What a week!

8 months, 1 week

I'm so sorry I missed Brock's 8 month birthday post and no post last week! It was absolutely a crazy week!

First let's start with the exciting news! Brock is saying MAMA!!!!!!!!!!!! He has randomly said a few times in the past, but he says it now, all the time! The first time he started saying it, he would just say it over and over again. In one weekend, he went from saying mostly just the 'da' syllable, to saying 'ma', 'na' and 'ba'! It was pretty eventful! When he started saying 'da da', it was clear he had no idea what it meant. But now that he's saying 'mama', he seems to know what he's saying. Sometimes he says it just to talk, but other times, if I walk out of the room or someone else is holding him and he wants me, he'll start saying 'mama'. It's so sweet!!

We are also almost convinced that he can say 'dog'. Now obviously, it doesn't sound like 'dog', more just like 'dah', but he says it a lot of times when he's looking at Oscar or a picture of a dog. It could totally be a coincidence, but we think he's a baby genius already!

For the not so fun stuff, last Tuesday, Brock came down with a pretty high fever. We were out for Drew's birthday and he was just tired and mopey and only wanted me to hold him. He felt like he was on fire! We got him and his temp was over 102 so we called the nurse line. They said it didn't seem like anything to be too worried about, probably just his body fighting an infection. The next morning he woke up with no fever (probably thanks to Baby Motrin) and seemed fine. Until about mid-morning when I got a text from Cynthia that his fever was back. I immediately made a doctor's appointment for that afternoon. After checking him from head to toe, all they could see was a little redness in his ears, so they gave him some antibiotics for it.

He had to stay home from daycare on Thursday and he was fine most of the day. His eyes still looked tired, but was acting fine, no fever. Until that night when his fever shot up again to almost 104. Again, I called the nurse line and they said not to worry. That it was just his body fighting the infection. I felt terrible. He just wanted to be held, so I just held and snuggled him all night, and stayed home with him Friday. By Saturday, the fever seemed to have gone away, however, a rash broke out all over his little tummy! It didn't seem to itch and it didn't really spread and so after another call to the nurse line, where they said it was probably just his ecsema or dry skin, we tried to let it go. He was getting a little too used to being just with mommy/daddy all day. He started throwing little tantrums when we would leave the room or take something away from him. Last night, we couldn't WAIT for bedtime and needless to say, we were happy to get back into our routine today!

Now, for his 8 month stats:
- Eating 4, 6 oz bottles a day
- Eats breakfast, lunch and dinner (cereal and fruit, cereal and veggie and veggie/fruit)
- We've started letting him try other foods - cheese, crackers, breads, etc and he's started learning to chew!
- Still no crawling but looks like he's trying to get there
- Saying 'mama', 'dada', 'ba', 'na', 'da'
- Feeds himself his bottle
- Talks a LOT - and sometimes just yells to hear himself!

Who took my sweet boy?

7 months, 3 weeks

Alert! An alien has taken over my sweet little angel boy's body and is holding him hostage! We get glimpses of him from time to time, but this new aggressive, loud, bossy, but also hilarious alien has really thrown us for a loop!! Brock has always been a very chill, sweet baby. However, over the last week or so, his personality has started to change!

It started last week with is 'fake cry' that he totally forces when you make him do something he doesn't want to do (change his diaper), take something away from him, don't feed him fast enough or put him down when he wants you to hold him. Then it transformed over the weekend to him being a complete maniac rolling all over the place! We thought he had just skipped that step, but apparently he just was behind the ball a bit. He started just rolling everywhere to get to what he wanted or even just for rolling sake!

The alien took it to a whole new level on Tuesday night when he decided to just completely take over. On top of screaming thru dinner (which is really putting a hamper and possibly a total ka-bosh on the sign language), he was just wild all night long. He pooped after going to bed (which he hasn't done since he was a newborn) so we had to wake him out of a deep sleep, change him (from head to toe), and try and put him back down. He went back down with a minimal fight, but by  2:30 am, he woke up with his arm stuck in the crib. I went in to fix it, expecting he'd just fall right back to sleep as usual. But nope, he was WIDE AWAKE and would scream anytime I left the room. I stayed in there with him, trying to soothe and calm him down. Then slowly crept out. He was ok for maybe a minute. We tried letting him just 'cry it out' since he wasn't even really crying, more just yelling. Until after about 30-45 mins, he wouldn't give it up and was actually starting to get worse.

So, we broke one of our only rules with him. Something we never do, but seeing how we are used to a full nights sleep (I know, I know, we suck), we let him sleep in our bed. He just didn't want to be alone and we just wanted sleep. Well, little did I know that would entail me getting poked and scratched all night as he still couldn't find the sandman. Between his on and off 30 min to 1 hr 'cat naps', we were able to catch a few zzzz's ourselves. By 6:30, the alien was done even trying to sleep so up we all got to get him fed and changed. He spent most of the morning yelling at me while I got ready. Not mad yelling, just yelling!

Cynthia says his personality has started to come out a lot more there too. Him and his buddy Bo were yelling back and forth to each other yesterday.  I can only imagine how that looked! By last night, the alien seemed to be losing control and the sweet (and sleeping!) angel boy started to come back! No matter if he's the alien or the angel, we love him just the same!

This week, he has started eating pears AND gets veggies with his fruit at night. He loves the pears! As previously mentioned, we may have started the sign language thing a little too late for this one. I hate 'giving up', but at the same time, I don't want to make meal times too stressful for either of us. He wants his food so fast and screams if you take too long between bites, so it's hard to get him to slow down and learn the signs. Besides, with that boy, it's not like you really ever have to question what he wants!! LOL! I am working now on trying to slow him down a little big when he's eating. I don't want him to end up like me and scarf his whole mean before he even realizes how fast he's going.

He's definitely close to crawling. He's started pushing himself backwards with his arms on the hardwoods and again, rolling everywhere. I can tell he's trying to get up on all fours and imagine it'll come sooner than we realize! We are fully prepared to spend lots of time in the basement where there's carpet when he gets crazy mobile!

We've also started trying to teach him how to 'high five'. It didn't take long, but he's already starting to figure it out! He loves it and especially loves when you tell him 'good job' when he does it. He loves, I mean LOVES pictures. Mostly of himself, but he'll look at any pictures. He's starting to recognize Mommy and Daddy in pictures too! That is way cool! I asked him where 'mama' was the other day and he looked up at a big picture of us from our wedding! When you show him a picture of himself, you'd think you were showing him the winning lottery numbers! He gets the biggest smile on his face and sometimes laughs! It's pretty cute!

No new teeth yet that we can see, but his hair is getting darker by the day. Sometimes it looks dirty blonde, sometimes it looks like it may be trying to turn brown and then some days it looks straight up red! Not dark red, total ginger red! Either way, it's adorable!

He has also started learning how to isolate his forefinger. Usually he would grab or touch things with his whole hand. Now, he has learned how to just stick out his forefinger and touch things (usually my face). We call it his creepy ET finger. It's so cute and amazing to know that he's learning so much every day!

Happy New Year

7 months, 2 weeks

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you were able to ring in the new year doing whatever makes you happy, with the people you love!! We went over to Uncle Drew/Aunt Erin's house and hung out. It was low key and perfect! Brock was able to sleep in the guest bedroom and at midnight I went in to give him a little midnight kiss and he just happened to be awake! It was perfect!

As the year came to an end, it felt odd to be celebrating the last day of the year Brock was born! It has gone so fast and been such an amazing 7 months. He makes every day better, brighter and more special. I always knew I wanted to be a mommy but nothing prepared me for how much I would love it and how much it would change me as a person. It has made me more patient, more sympathetic, less worried about drama and negativity and just happier overall. It's the greatest gift ever!

This week, Brock is on apples and he LOVES, I mean LOVES them! They are definitely his new favorite! He has started shaking his head 'no' and loves to laugh at Oscar. He's so funny and we can just watch him for hours!

I wanted to start it much sooner, but it sort of got away from me, but we are going to try and do some sign language with him. Just little things like 'more', 'all done', 'eat', 'bathe', 'sleep', 'please' and 'thank you'. I know many of these signs from my mom, but Nick will have to learn them too and we have to be committed to using them! I'll keep you posted!
